Green Burendo: Burendo goes Carbon Neutral

From footprint to forest: how Burendo achieved carbon neutrality through action

Here at Burendo sustainability isn’t just a buzzword, it’s at the heart of everything we do. We believe in delivering innovative products and services for our clients, while minimising our impact on the planet. That’s why we’re excited to announce a significant milestone in our sustainability journey – achieving carbon neutrality!

What does being Carbon Neutral mean?

Carbon neutrality means that the carbon dioxide emissions we generate are balanced by an equivalent amount removed from the atmosphere, therefore having zero carbon footprint. For us, this involved reducing our own emissions by 20% in one year, ensuring our practices are as sustainable as possible, as well as investing in projects that capture carbon dioxide, like planting trees to offset any unavoidable emissions.

Our journey to becoming green

Since Burendo started out in 2018, we’ve been mindful of our environmental impact and our eco responsibility as a business. Recently, we’ve actively worked to reduce our environmental footprint and operate more sustainably. In 2022, we accelerated our sustainability efforts by choosing our Wellington Place office, specifically for its highly energy-efficient building in central Leeds along with its eco-friendly communities and initiatives. We’re proud to say our Wellington Place office uses traceable energy from 100% renewable sources.

Our city centre location offers our Burendoers convenient access to both local and national bus and rail routes, making sustainable transportation easy for our team and our clients.

In the past 12 months alone, we have invested in credible carbon offsetting projects, nominated a Green Ambassador within Burendo, achieved the Green Mark Level 1 certification and attained ISO 14001 accreditation.

But that’s not all. We also run a number of sustainability initiatives and have designed our processes within Burendo to ensure that we do all we can to further reduce our emissions:

  • We regularly analyse our usage to reduce unnecessary waste, including replacing single-use plastic with biodegradable or reusable alternatives, providing our team with re-fillable bottles and mugs, and recycling wherever possible. We also installed a Quooker water filter tap in our kitchen to reduce our dependency on single-use plastics and prevent the repeated boiling of a kettle.
  • We operate a cycle to work scheme and have free App-Bike hire available to all Burendoers, in collaboration with Wellington Place.
  • We work with partners who share our commitment to sustainability, minimising our environmental footprint throughout our supply chain.
  • We are increasing our investment in certified Carbon Offsetting programs to tackle those remaining few emissions that can’t be reduced or eliminated.

Why it matters

Climate change is a pressing issue, and businesses have a responsibility to be part of the solution, especially during periods of growth. By achieving carbon neutrality and setting out an achievable Sustainability and Carbon Reduction roadmap, we’re taking a crucial step towards a healthier planet, even as we continue to grow.

But this is just the beginning of Burendo’s sustainability journey. We have set ourselves some ambitious goals and remain committed to continuous improvement, constantly exploring new ways to minimise our environmental impact.
